Network Events/Projects:
Have developed and are distributing a brochure describing elder abuse and who to contact for assistance – Education committee members have participated in a train-the-trainer workshop facilitated by the Regional Consultant in order to learn how to facilitate the (ONPEA) Basic I and Basic II Power Point presentations – A survey of local Lawyers is being conducted in an attempt to identify how many Lawyers have been contacted to assist in cases of the abuse of older adults.

Our Mandate:
Northumberland Elder Abuse Response Network (NEARN) was created in the Spring of 2006 to facilitate the planning and coordination of services related to elder abuse prevention in Northumberland County and to provide education and awareness about Elder Abuse in the community. Volunteer members of NEARN reflect the diverse geographic areas of Northumberland County as well as health, social services, justice, ethno culture, seniors, housing, faith, education sectors, First Nations and individuals concerned about the issue of Elder Abuse. Northumberland Elder Abuse Response Network is committed to working toward creating a safe community for older adults - the kind of community that we want to grow up in - and to grow old in.
Activities:
Provide a forum for members of the community to meet, discuss and develop strategies, protocols, standards and procedures relating to the prevention of elder abuse
Plan and coordinate educational activities relating to the prevention of elder abuse
Reach out to a broad spectrum of the community to increase awareness and promote the prevention of elder abuse
Create linkages and partnerships with Regional, Provincial and National committees to promote and facilitate the coordination of activities relating to the prevention of elder abuse
Assist communities to access resources relating to the prevention of elder abuse

YorkService provider representatives to older adults meet quarterly. They have developed a brochure that defines the abuse of older adults, the forms that that abuse can take, and where to find assistance for someone who is being abused, or who is being abused. (To date this brochure is available in four languages, reflecting the languages that are spoken in the Region.)
Received New Horizon funding to allow them to increase the prevention of elder abuse by providing knowledge to seniors regarding what elder abuse is, and where to access assistance. Committee membersl train older adults to co-facilitate educational session to older adults in their community.
